Workflows

A saved workflow is a Claude Code script that runs a procedure the same way every time: which agents run, in which order, and what the script checks between them. Genie v6.261003.1 ships 12. genie install and genie update copy them into ~/.claude/workflows.

The catalog

WorkflowWhat it doesSkill that starts it
brainstormRuns one round of a brainstorm whose state lives in DRAFT.md, so you answer between rounds, and ends in an independently reviewed DESIGN.mdbrainstorm

observability-reviewReviews traced Claude Code sessions in Phoenix and proposes rule changes, each tied to cited evidence; proposal onlynone

research-sweepInvestigates a frozen question against a frozen list of sources and keeps every claim cited; read onlyresearch
skill-audit-sweepSorts the shipped skills into keep, improve, update, merge or retire; assess onlyskill-audit
skill-intakeAssesses candidate skills from outside the catalog and gives each exactly one disposition; changes nothingskill-audit

How a workflow runs

In Claude Code, a skill starts its workflow and passes the arguments for you. It runs your repository's own copy in .claude/workflows/ when there is one, otherwise the copy in ~/.claude/workflows/, and always by the file's explicit path. /workflows in Claude Code shows the runs in progress.
A workflow with no skill in front of it runs when you ask Claude Code to run its file under ~/.claude/workflows/ by path.
Codex and other agents have no saved workflows. There, the skills run the same stages by hand.

What a run costs

genie wish report <runId> prints the tokens and time of one workflow run, per stage, from the run record Claude Code saved. --append also adds the run to a ledger at ~/.genie/metrics/wish-runs.jsonl. The Quickstart shows the report of one real wish run.

Keeping the catalog in step

  • genie install and genie update record each workflow file they copy, with its digest, in ~/.genie/skills-install.json.
  • genie doctor prints one read-only workflows: catalog line. It names any recorded file that was edited by hand, deleted, or left by another release, and repairs nothing.
  • genie update archives a copy it cannot prove under ~/.genie/state-backups/workflows-collision-<timestamp>/, names it in its output and replaces it. A hand edit is a local override with a backup; a lasting change belongs in the genie repository's workflow catalog.
  • genie uninstall removes only the recorded files whose digest still matches, and reports the rest.
